My 15 Seconds of Fame

Last Friday afternoon, I was watching "Your World" with Neil Cavuto on the Fox News channel. I was informed that I could email a comment to the show, and they would show some comments on Fox Business Network that evening, so I said "what the heck", let's see what happens, so I fired off a comment. Now I figured my chances were about the same as hitting the CT Lotto, but I set up the DVR just in case. The following clip is the result.

  1. Hi Jon,

I just found your "Rambling" business card with
the blogspot address. A few questions:

With regard to "Govt-run Health Care:" I find
the name a little too all-inclusive. Isn't it
more like the govt regulating the health-insurance business? Can you think of instances where govt regulation is beneficial?

Do you think that private insurance companies
would be willing to insure newborns or young children with pre-existing conditions?

How many doctors do you know that are happy
    with private health insurance?

Health insurance in a number of ways is quite
different from ALL other types of insurance. Enumerate.

If you could decide before your birth the type of health insurance you would have, what would
    you chose?

    Later, Dick

  2. Boy, I haven't had to take a test since I got of college.

Item #1 Glad you found my card. Good to hear from you.

Item #2 The government is going far beyond regulating the insurance industry. They are mandating what has to be covered, like pre-existing conditions. This can do nothing but increase costs to the insurance companies, with resulting increases in premiums, which will cause the "left" to demonize the insurance companies at best or put them out of business, which is their ultimate goal, so that we have single payer Government insurance run out of Washington. This is where the "left" wants to take us. If you think that is good, do some honest research on medical care in England or Canada which have such systems. I cannot think of any instance where government regulation is beneficial in the health care field.

Item #3 Absolutely, but it would be based on the condition, or there could be an industry wide high risk pool, the same as with auto insurance.

Item #4 I have only talked to my doctor. She says there are problems with the insurance companies, but nothing compared to what it looks like is coming from Obamacare. She specializes in Medicare patients and only sees reduced payments for the same services and rationing of services. You can't take $500 million out of Medicare and have it stay the same.

Item #5 The only difference I can see is that you have little control over what happens to you, health wise, whereas you can control how you drive, keep your house safe from possible fire, etc.

Item #6 Some type of major medical policy with a high deductible (Maybe $2500 or something like that and total coverage beyond that)

The free market always does things cheaper and more efficiently than the government. The way to "fix" healthcare in this country is to get the government out of it entirely, let the free market work. Doctors, insurance companies, radiologists, blood labs , etc. will have to compete, and competition always drives down prices and increases quality. If this is done, health care costs will grow (on average) no faster than inflation and if it was done there would probably be a period where prices would actually drop quite a bit.

  3. One thing I forgot to mention. We need tort reform. Limit pain and suffering damages to a set amount, but not economic damages. Depending on their specialty, doctors pay anywhere from $100,000 to $200,000 a year in malpractice insurance and if you come in with a problem, they will order every test in the book whether needed or not to cover their butt in case they get sued. This just drives up the cost of healthcare.
