Environmental Math

I just read a story about a New Jersey nuclear power plant that is threatening to shut down unless NJ's DEP drops a demand that it build new cooling towers that don't take water from Barnegut Bay because of it's killing of marine life. Below is a quote from the article.

Quote - "But an even more immediate impact is seen at the plant itself, where vast amounts of marine life including fish and crab eggs, larvae and small animals are killed by getting sucked into the plant, or trapped against screening gates. The environmental group "Save Barnegut Bay" estimates the plant kills nearly 3 percent of the bay's marine life each day — an assertion Exelon disputes."

The way I figure it, the bay will be totally lifeless in 34 days. Wait, the plant is 40 years old and if it is killing 3% of the wildlife everyday, that bay has already been lifeless for 39+ years, so what's the big deal, there's nothing left to kill.  It's obvious that the "Save Barnegut Bay" people did not do good in math when they were in school. Probably went to public schools
